We propose to organize a new independent charter school that will serve the families and students of Providence, th capital city.
With sufficient community support, it is anticipated that the Trinity Academy for Performing Arts (TAPA) will officially open with thirty-four (34) 7th grade students in the Theater Annex Building on the 1.75-acre campus of Trinity United Methodist Church in time for the academic year that begins September 2010. Once fully developed, TAPA will serve 204 students in grades 7 - 12.
TAPA will be characterized by a longer school day, opening at 9:00 AM and closing at 6:00 PM, with multiple out-of-school offerings that will also serve the broader community.
TAPA will strive to provide quality, rigorous instruction in the 4 core areas of Humanities, Math, Science and Modern Language - using the creative mediums of theater, music, dance, film and video, and design.
The Academy will value an integrated and highly interactive approach on learning, will take full advantage of the splendid cultural diversity of the community, will seek to involve parents in every aspect of the Academy's life, and will place a premium on the continuous development of its professional staff and resident artists.
The non-profit sponsor of TAPA is Trinity Restoration Inc., whose executive director is Richardson Ogidan and board chair is Dr. Mator Kpangbai.
To further its mission, TAPA will seek every opportunity to collaborate with other partners in the community, including but not limited to: The Children's Theater Company, Trinity Repertory Company, Community Preparatory School, CVS Highlander School, John Hope Settlement House, Youth in Action, City Arts, AS220 and Rhode Island College's Master of Fine Arts program.
As the Academy expands, the master plan calls for the addition of an 18,000 square feet "green" school buidling constructed adjacent to the Theater Annex that is designed to feature the latest in energy-conserving and environmentally-friendly technologies.
